Book Description
for Forty Winks by Kelly DiPucchio and Lita Judge
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
The Winks are a family of mice—and yes, there are 40 of them; a mother, father, and 38 children, all of who are pictured and named on a double-page spread that’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. Not surprisingly, bedtime is an ordeal. All 38 of them need to be bathed, pajamaed, read to, and tucked in; and then little Moe says he’s thirsty, and suddenly his 37 siblings all need a drink of water, too. Finally, once all are in bed, they sleep and sleep and sleep, until it’s time to get up and start all over again. A closing double-page spread shows all the Winks lined up and invites readers to name them all. And since each one is so distinctively depicted, it would actually be possible to do so—it just might take a while. The rollicking rhyming text makes the book fun to read aloud, and the funny, detailed watercolor-and-pencil illustrations give listeners plenty to look at.
