Book Descriptions
for Shabbat Shalom! by Douglas Florian and Hannah Tolson
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
As the sun sinks in a pink-washed sky on Friday evening, a white Jewish family hurries home to prepare for the beginning of the Sabbath. Dressed in their best, the family of five joins grandmother and grandfather at a beautifully laid dinner table complete with covered challah loves, white candles in silver candlesticks, and red kiddush wine. The older son and both adult males wear kippot, while the women wear headscarves and modest dresses. “The prayer is said on challah bread,” and the family enjoys a hearty meal followed by songs and conversation. Finally, the mother escorts her three yawning children upstairs, where they are tucked into a cozy shared bedroom. Contentment and love suffuse the warm, cheerful illustrations and simple rhyming couplets of this board book. “A happy home. Shabbat shalom!” (Ages birth-3)
