Book Description
for Dear Treefrog by Joyce Sidman and Diana Sudyka
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A girl recently arrived in a new home finds comfort and a kind of companionship from a treefrog in the garden. While the poems on each page focus primarily on the treefrog, readers can also follow the story of the light-skinned, dark-haired girl, who continues to observe the frog over the course of the next year. Her loneliness and trepidation at starting a new school in the fall are eventually replaced by a friendship with a brown-skinned child who shares her interest in the natural world and approaches it with the same careful calm. Accessible poems relay both facts and whimsical observations about treefrogs, supplemented with additional information on a final page. Gouache watercolor illustrations glow with vibrant shades anchored by the lush greens of the treefrog’s garden home. (Ages 4-8)
