Four episodic stories told in short, easy-to-read sentences in a large font, accompanied by expressive acrylic and india ink illustrations, follow a small Black boy over the course of a day. In the morning, when it’s time to get dressed, Kenny puts on a clothing item belonging to each of his other family members in turn: Daddy (“Can he wear this shirt? No, that’s Daddy’s shirt.”), Mommy (shoes), sister (shorts), and Granddaddy (hat). In the next story, Kenny is at odds with the vacuum cleaner, which he finds scary. In the third story, Kenny’s big sister is helping him learn to play soccer (“No hands!” ). Finally, the five-minute countdown to bedtime commences but Kenny isn’t tired and isn’t tired … until he suddenly is. But he’s not too tired for mommy to read to him. Each brief story features a patterned text and repetition in a picture book full of warmth and whimsy. (Ages 2-4)
