Book Descriptions
for D Is for Dress Up by Maria Carluccio
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
An alphabet concept book devoted to clothing ranges from simple words ( A pron) to more complex ( E nsemble), and some that are in-between ( B ow tie & B ow, C ostume, D ress Up). Digitally rendered illustrations look like woodblock prints and showcase soft hues and inviting compositions. The distinctive, multiracial cast is populated with diverse and unique children. While some of the gender roles depicted are traditional (for I ce skates, a boy is playing hockey and a girl is figure skating), others are not (the A pron is worn by a boy and the J eans by a girl). Endpapers show empty hangers in the front, and the same hangers filled with the clothes featured in the book at the back. In between, pages tracking A through Z ( Z ippers) invite repeat visits to their appealing tableaus. (Ages 2–5)
