A bold red truck, a bright blue sky, and a golden landscape set the stage for this visually dynamic, whimsical, not-quite-wordless book in which the truck stops at the edge of a cliff. A man gets out of the cab, opens the back, and—surprise! A bird flies out. An unmatched flock of spectacular colors follows. And then they’re gone … almost. Inside the inky blackness of the truck a pair of eyes glow. One small, black, flightless bird remains. Man and bird exchange a few looks, then share a sandwich. Flight lessons follow, as the man flaps and leaps, and the bird mimics until … success! But the story doesn’t end there. Truthfully, the few words in this picture book are superfluous. It’s Albertine’s illustrations that tell a tale that is wholly unexpected, and full of warmth and delight. Young readers will have no problem making their own meanings from this magical offering.
