Tension builds as an affluent Black family drives in their brand-new 1950 car south from their home in Ohio to Mississippi to visit relatives. With relatively few words, Taylor manages to create a vivid sense of time and place, and she shows through a child's eyes the horror of institutionalized racism. (Ages 8-12)
