Escaping from slavery in Missouri, Luther and his younger sister, Carrie, are separated from their parents during their journey north on the Underground Railroad. Hoping to be reunited with them, the two continue on, guided by "conductors" and others whose commitment to the cause of abolition is as strong as the children's own desire for freedom.
