for Liliana's Grandmothers by Leyla Torres
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
Liliana, a Latina girl living in the United States, compares and contrasts her two grandmother, Mima and mama Gabina. Because Mima lives on the same street as Liliana, they see each other frequently. Mima sews, takes yoga lessons, is active in her church, and serves her granddaughter peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch. Mama Gabina lives in another country and speaks only Spanish. When Liliana visits her, they enjoy talking to her pet bird, working in her garden, and dancing the cumbia. She always prepares a big lunch and takes a siesta afterwards. Colombian-born author/artist Leyla Torres provides a realistic portrait of a young child's growing awareness of her bicultural heritage. (Ages 4-8)

A gentle, loving look at grandmothers
Liliana's grandmother Mima lives up the street, does yoga exercises, and likes crossword puzzles. Liliana's other grandmother, Mama Gabina, lives in South America, enjoys gardening, and likes to dance around the house. The meals they cook are very different, the stories they tell are different, but one thing about them is the same: they both love their granddaughter. And Liliana adores them. Leyla Torres's watercolors show all the warmth and homeyness that are intrinsic in special family relationships.
