Book Description
for Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts
From The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY)
Iggy Peck had been building towers “since he was two” (n.p.). One night, he builds the “St. Louis Arch from pancakes and coconut pie” (n.p.). But in second grade, his teacher says architecture has “no place” in her classroom (n.p.). One day, Miss Greer takes the class on a hike. As they cross an old footbridge to an island, the bridge collapses, and they are stranded. Iggy rescues them with a bridge “dangling from shoestring suspension” (n.p.). The illustrations convey the whimsical humor of this rhyming story. Detailed drawings of buildings and bridges, some on graph paper, highlight Iggy’s architectural ambitions. David Roberts’s awards include a 2006 Nestlé Gold for Mouse Noses on Toast . hc
